good morning. looking live at the transamerica building in the city. traffic is light now. you can bet there will be a crush of cars all around the city by the bay. san francisco expecting massive crowds to fill streets and sidewalks this sunday. though traffic is moving slowly this morning. as many as a million people will attend an unprecedented number of events in the city to not only a giants playoff game tonight but 49ers are at the stick. blue angels are in town for fleet week and it's championship race day in the america's cup. also a number of local festivals going on including the italian heritage parade. we have a rundown of all of it for you. thank you so much for joining us this morning. i'm kris sanchez. our live coverage of the bay's

big weekend starts right now. first though, "today in the bay's" anthony slaughter is joining us with a pressure filled forecast. i feel for you. the fog could ruin so many different things. >> even at this time we're usually fogged in in san francisco. a beautiful start to the day. once again even yesterday we have an upper level low off the coast. we won't see a lot of fog until monday night when it will go downhill. 52 in santa rosa. you need a jacket this morning. upper level spin off the coast will continue to offer up more cloud cover through the day so as we head through the day, clouds on the increase but the big headline here is that it is jacket weather. 67 in san francisco. only 72 in san jose. 75 in livermore. that will be one of our warmer spots. inland to get the heat. at the coast breezy and chilly. stay tuned for the seven-day

forecast. we have two chances of rain in the forecast this upcoming week. >> let's hope that it is not when it counts. we'll get to you in a minute. a tough morning after for bay area baseball fans. giants and a's both losing their first games in the playoffs. comcast sports net reporter is live at the park. the team is trying to turn the page after last night. amy? >> reporter: yeah. they definitely need a bounce back win tonight. they have put themselves actually in a must win situation. they have to get a win at home before heading to cincinnati and playing on tuesday. last night a strange game starting off with the red starter just after eight pitches with back spasms. he thought the giants would have the advantage there. with that reds bull pen it was just too much. giants able to only muster seven hits one a bustier posey home run but not enough. only 75 pitches but the skipper

had to pull him after a costly mistake. >> hanging breaking ball to phillips is something that you don't want to happen and definitely in a big game situation like this. the hanging breaking balls always hurt more. >> it would have been nice to score more runs for him so he could have stayed in there longer. >> reporter: tonight the goal will be to string some hits together. looking for that elusive big hit. some not so good news. the last time the giants lost the first game of a postseason series and came back to win, 1921 against the new york yankees and that was when the world series was nine games. i think it's time. i think they can do it. let's get it back to you. >> that's scary. 1921. thank you very much. let's bring in kate who is live.

a's looking for redemption after that tough loss in detroit. kate? >> reporter: you're absolutely right. after the a's lost last night dropping the first game in the first playoff appearance since 2006, the a's staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in the nl west so the green and gold are not too worried. the a's took the field saturday behind rookie jared parker who takes the loss despite a stellar outing. oakland couldn't get offense going against justin verlander. the american league mvp gave off a home run but after that he kept the a's offbalance striking out 11 making the a's ready for one more. >> i guess good maybe that we play at noon. i don't know if there's anything good about a noon game but if there is it's coming off a loss and being able to get out there. >> you have to let it go. go home and get some rest and come back here and focus on doug

park today. we're week five into the nfl season but the 49ers have played three of the first four games on the road including their last two in minnesota and in new york. i'm sure the 49er faithful will be out in full force to welcome their team home to the second home game. there is fun craziness happening around the bay area. they hope to help people avoid some of that congestion that's sure to take place on the bay bridge as well as coming up the 101. the team will be taking part in some of these great festivities as well as part of the pregame ceremonies, fleet week will come to candlestick park as air force will do a flyover and then at halftime, the team is going to honor 20 new enlistees into the naval service as we honor those men and women services to our country and the team also donated it 100 tickets to service men and women so they

knows is a number of american cups race boats. yesterday there was a parade of ships led by the fireboat phoenix. today people will get a closer look at these navy vessels, ship tours and other vessels are available from 9:00 this morning until 4:00 in the afternoon. tours are free. it's first come first served and you do have to be at least 8 years old to go on a ship tour. at noon there is another fleet week air show. today we get to see a coast guard rescue demonstration. there's going to be heritage flight, f-18s and a marine corps demonstration. blue angels will perform today but not until this afternoon and remember there's still that america's cup world series race. super sunday fleet races start just before 2:00. you want to get out here early because yesterday there were a lot of crowds krcoming out hereo see the boat and do the tour. >> all right. thank you very much. nice to see no fog there.

san francisco is not the only bay area city that is hopping with action this weekend. this morning thousands of runners are converging in the south bay for the rock 'n' roll san jose of a marathon. a live picture of san jose and a lot of roads downtown are

blocked off this morning to make way for that race. it starts at 8:00 this morning at west santa clara street. more than 20 local bands will play at 15 different stages along the 13-mile course. people love that race. they say it's flat and fast. i say not fast enough. what do you think? >> i saw you with your running shoes on. this morning it's very chilly. it's 45 in napa this morning. 46 in novato. a ten-degree temperature difference in san francisco as 56 degrees from the south bay to 40s this morning. grab that jacket if you are heading out in the next couple hours. we do have low cloud deck starting to brush up against the coast. you can see that forming from san francisco down toward pacifica. here's the big story. we have an upper level low spinning off the coast. you can see it on satellite image. you can also take out those clouds that are starting to scoot in on the bottom of that. that shows this system is starting to organize and it will start to move in to the coast as

we head through the day today. not offering any showers today or tomorrow. it's not until tuesday that those showers arrive but i want to show you the big picture. look at this system across the pacific. this is what we're waiting on for next weekend. that's going to offer the chance for increased cloud cover by friday and then the chance for more rain for saturday. in the short-term of things we have this slow moving system that kind of cutoff from the main flow of things. this thing is slowly going to move as we head through the next day or so. by monday night into tuesday, you can expect to see some showers across the area and we're not talking about widespread rain event. this will be hit and miss. not everyone will see rain. the folks that do see rain, a cool, chilly rain with 60s and 70s for daytime highs and up against the coast, it's going to be a struggle to get out of the 50s into the 60s. let's show you what happens as this system moves a little bit closer. no rain in the forecast. even for tomorrow it looks good. monday morning right at the coast you'll notice we are expecting to see that fog return

and also potential for a few spotty showers monday at the coast. look at what happens on tuesday. the system scoots south. a little bit of moisture that moves inland. by tuesday afternoon, the chance for showers is likely across the bay area. it scoots to our south by wednesday but even still as this thing moves in, we expect to see spotty showers by wednesday and clearing for thursday and as i showed you in the big picture, more showers in the forecast. jacket weather across the board. we're talking mid 70s at the warmest. 77 in fairfield. 67 at the coast. even santa cruz only at 68 degrees. earlier this week we were in the triple digits at the beach. not beach weather today. temperatures in san francisco lots going on. fleet week america's cup and even 49ers are taking place today. lots going on. here's your hour by hour forecast. 66 by noon. 61 by 4:00 with fog returning. mostly sunny throughout the day. fog returns tonight and even for

tomorrow it remains at the coast. tuesday that's when that best shot of rain moves in. even for wednesday we'll have a few lingering showers. thursday some sunshine. friday the clouds move back in and saturday more showers expected. overall a cloudier pattern this week and the shot of rain midweek and again next weekend. >> all right. thank you very much, anthony. new this morning, a massive brawl on san francisco city streets it police and medics rush to the north beach neighborhood after reports of unruly crowds. officers arrived and spotted a fight involving about 20 people on broadway and montgomery just after 2:00 this morning. police sent several units to the scene to get the situation under control. several people were injured. it will be a solemn mass this morning for parishioners at a church. a minivan hit and killed a 6-year-old girl at a church in daly city. the accident happened around 9:00 yesterday morning as mass was go to begin and catechism was under way for the children.

police say a woman in her 50s driving a minivan hit a mother and her child and another woman. >> it's shocking to me. in a parking lot. >> we didn't know what happened. someone was crying for help. >> all three victims were taken to san francisco general hospital where the 6-year-old girl died. the two women, one 45 and other 46 years old are still in the hospital. their conditions are not being released. parishioners are praying for the families involved and police are investigated. a neighborhood is stunned this morning after discovery of the neighbor's body. the woman's husband called a neighbor to ask them to check on their neighbor and they found the neighbor lying on the ground. they say the woman died from severe trauma. the family car was also missing and now police are looking for that sky blue subaru outback. idaho license plate number 1 a 1 f 680.

anyone with information is urged to call hercules police. san francisco police are looking for a pair of car thiefs. this happened last night around 6:30 last night. investigators say a.s. park officer spotted a man breaking into a parked car. that man jumped into a car waiting nearby and his accomplice tried to run down that officer. he miss and the park officer opened fire. the man were last seen in a light tan buick sedan. now to decision 2012, president barack obama is making another west coast swing. he'll be in los angeles tonight for a concert fund-raiser and then he will head here to san francisco for another event on monday. the visit comes off a campaign trail filled with dramatic turns. the latest economic numbers last week showed the unemployment rate was better than expected. in his weekly address, president obama talked about the sudden

drop from 8.1% to 7.8% while mitt romney and the republican contender gave his own take on why. >> the number to people if percentage of the american population in the workforce were the same today as the day he was elected, our unemployment rate would be above 11%. >> more americans are entering the workforce. more americans are getting jobs. >> the unemployment news not talk of wednesday night's presidential debates and the president's poor performance right out of the headlines. some republicans suggest that the labor department's timing was no convince. the vice presidential candidates are also getting ready for their first debate thursday night in kentucky. big bird is still making headlines after last week's presidential debate. republican mitt romney mentioned the beloved character when talked about the nation's debt and cutting funding for pbs. last night on "saturday night live," the beloved big bird responded. >> do you have any political statement you would like to

looking live at the boats that will participate in america's cup today. if you don't want to brave crowds and traffic, stick with us here on nbc bay area. we'll have live coverage starting at 1:30 this afternoon. this morning 22 people face charges after a violent protest in san francisco. this is cell phone video of police in riot gear. a group of demonstrators marcheded in that area yesterday vandalizing cars and businesses along the way. when police intervene, protesters threw bags of paint and rock at the officers. one officer was hit in the head but is expected to be okay. police say some protesters were armed with hammers and ice picks. it is still unclear why they were demonstrating. still ahead on "today in the bay," gas prices spike again overnight setting a new record here in california. the dramatic increase and when

pain at the pump is reaching a new level overnight. california gas prices surged surpassing the all-time high statewide record. right now the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $4.66. smashing the all-time high by a nickel. that was a record set in june of 2008. if you are looking to fill up today, the average in san francisco will cost you $4.73 for a gallon of regular unleaded. folkla the good news analysts say that gas prices in the golden state are expected to level off and begin dropping by midweek. still ahead on "today in the bay," a live look at san francisco where there is just a couple things going on in the city today. we have team coverage of the bay's big weekend coming up next. own are wonderful

good morning. looking live at san francisco where today will bring sports, sailing, festival, crowds and traffic. thanks for joining us. i'm kris sanchez. we'll get to your local news headlines in just a bit. first, the bay area getting ready for a very busy sunday. a little bit of something for everyone on the bay's big weekend. a giant's playoff game, fleet week, niners and a number of community events including the castro street fair. the big question is, will it be sunny in san francisco today? >> of course. you just saw it, right?

yesterday you had fog. >> reporter: there was fog yesterday. another beautiful morning. we're actually on a really good spot here. take a look behind me. the assault carrier, "uss macon island." a major attraction on fleet week. off her nose are world cup race boats. people were able to enjoy the parade of ships. today they get to board a lot of those ships and tour them for free. this is being done on first come first eserved basis and minimum age to do tour is 8 years old. macon island offers tours for a couple of those droestroyers th we saw. there will be demonstrations from coast guard and marine corps. there will be heritage flight and the blue angels are going to give another performance for the grand finale and remember there is still america's cup world series racing today and today's

readnerea readiness around the bay area. they'll open the gates two hours earlier than usual for a 1:25 kickoff. they want to help people arriving to tailgate avoid that congestion that will be over the bay bridge and coming up 101. as for the team itself, it's currently 3-1 and returns home after a 34-0 beating of the new york jets. a dominated defensive performance. they'll have quite a challenge with 2-2 buffalo bills playing here at candlestick for the first time since 2004. they have a very speedy running back. spiller leads the league in average yards per rushing at 8.3 yards per carry. he's dynamic every time he touches the ball. 49ers is number one in the league at limiting average yards per rush. that will be a very interesting dynamic to watch. 49ers running defense against spiller and the bills offense. we'll be here to bring you the postgame coverage around comcast sports net bay area after 1:25

now to decision 2012. president obama is back on the west coast today for what else? a fund-raising trip. the president will be in los angeles tonight for a concert featuring katy perry, earth wind and fire and stevie wonder among others. tomorrow night he'll be at the bill graham civic auditorium for another concert. that event is already sold out. after the concert is a reception dinner with tickets that cost as much as $40,000 per couple. next week the president will go head to head with mitt romney for the second of three debates and between now and then a showdown between vice president

joe biden and republican candidate paul ryan that will potentially add more fuel to a contentious political environment. from what happened and what is next, let's bring in nbc bay area's political analyst larry gerston. the question is people say the debates don't matter. too much emphasis. i think i disagree. i think you disagree. >> people who say they don't matter are the ones who say we lost. of course they matter. yes they matter. an estimated 70 million people watch the first debate. that's a lot of eyes watching a debate. it's hard to imagine for many it was their first introduction to especially mitt romney, who they haven't paid attention to. all this comes weeks, less than a month now, less than a month now, the clock is ticking before we have that next election. people are starting to pay attention to what some of us are doing for months and this is the time to get serious. >> we forget that sometimes --

sometimes we forget that they are together. that is the first time they shook hands in five years, right? >> yeah. >> so a lot of folks saying that mitt romney did better than the president, that the president did not pull his weight. what do you think? >> the fact of the matter is democrats are going to turn themselves inside out to playdown this whole thing and they should. because they didn't do well. their guy just didn't do well. the person that comes out ahead in ground run, it's important. that person sets the tone for the next two contests. romney did a great job pivoting from the far right where he was during the primary system to the center. he did that in 90 minutes flat. so what some commonly call flip-flopping really occurred in a major way last wednesday and romney was able to get away with

it. >> definitely interesting. you saw mitt romney that you hadn't seen before and a president that you hadn't really seen before. so looking ahead, the vice president candidates are going to debate. what can we expect out of there? >> we'll get a kick out of this. this is going to be such an interesting degree of difference between the two. right off the bat we're going to see generational differences. biden is 69. romney is 42. age is a funny thing when it comes to politics. the question is will biden look like yesterday's news or full of wisdom? will ryan appear as a youth or full of new energy? this is incredible? we can expect ryan to spit out statistic after statistic, one after another and biden is going to need÷ó"5÷ to call ryan on questionable data. i tell you, for his part, biden has to do a much better job defending the administration's record over the past four years.

welcome back. taking a look live at all of the activity on the embarcadero. a lot happening. if you're a sports fan, don't forget about the 49ers. let's go. we're rooting for a win here on this sunday. as you saw, we're looking at sunshine even in the city which is unusual. fog at this time of morning. not bad. picture perfect start to the day and even mild in san francisco. 56 degrees. milder in the city than it is in

the south bay. kind of unusual. 49 in san jose. even in santa cruz. 49. very chilly. even up against our beaches. definitely not beach weather today as those clouds will start to move on. you can see we don't have a lot of cloud cover at the immediate coast but this is our system that's going to move its way as we head through the next couple days. you can see the upper level spin and clouds that are forming on the bottom end of that. that's showing organization. once that eventually gets its act together, it will slide across the bay area as we head through monday and the chance of showers arrives for tuesday. we have a lot happening across the pacific. you can see that first spin. that's our upper level low. we also have a larger system off across the pacific. this thing here you can see that cloud cover and convection with that. that's what will move through as we head toward friday and saturday of this upcoming week. two chances of rain coming up as we head through this upcoming week. first one with this cutoff low will bring autumn showers through tuesday. for monday we're expecting just a little bit of fog and drizzle

at the coast. not until tuesday that this thing offers a few showers and it's not going to be widespread rain for everybody. it will be hit and miss. you'll have to get lucky to get the raindrops. 60s and 70s inland. and 50s and 60s at the coast for that fog arriving by tomorrow evening. again, for the timing of this, here's what our fall cast shows. by tomorrow morning, we'll start off with fog at the coast. it's not until tomorrow night that those clouds really start to pull in. the moisture starts to become more widespread. we're expecting to see drizzle at the coast tomorrow night and even for tuesday look at this. look how hit and miss showers will be. you won't see it across the board but there will be showers in the area for tuesday. the thing scoots to our south by wednesday but even on wednesday there will be lingering showers as our atmosphere has to wring out that last bit of rain. keep the umbrella handy on wednesday. you won't need it today. 75 in santa rosa. south bay numbers lower 70s in
